Q: What should I have to run Keepoint?
    A: Microsoft® Windows® Operating System with Internet Explorer® 5.01 or above.

Q: I downloaded Keepoint and the installation was successful. However, nothing happens when I click on the KeepointS, KeepointT or KeepointL icons. What is wrong?
A: As Keepoint works inside Microsoft® Internet Explorer®, you need to first close the Microsoft Internet Explorer and either reopen it or click on the Keepoint icon. If the above procedure does not solve your problem, please reboot your computer and you should be able to use Keepoint, after rebooting.

    Q:
When I try to install, I am getting one of the following errors during setup initialization:
       - Error installing Ikernel.exe (0x any number)
       - Error extracting support files
       - Access is denied
       - Error loading Type Library/DLL
A: This is an InstallShield® issue and most likely due to insufficient permissions on the machine. If you are using a Windows® XP/2000/NT machine, you need to have administrative permission to run an InstallShield® Professional setup. Make sure you have the correct permissions. Click here for more details.

Q: I have downloaded the Keepoint 7 (A free version) of Keepoint. How do I purchase the product?
A: You can purchase the product from our online store. Please

Q: How do I import my favorites(bookmarks) from Microsoft Internet Explorer?
A: From the System Tray Icon right click menu, choose User Settings and select the Program tab. You can import your existing collection of bookmarks from the Internet Explorer Favorites, by clicking on Import. The import process may take some time, depending on the number of links stored in your Favorites. The import process not only does not delete the links from your Favorites, but it also imports them only once to Keepoint.

    Q:
What are the ICONS that are added by Keepoint to the Internet Explorer Toolbar?
A: KeepointS (Workbench - Main User Interface), KeepointT (Time Sorted - Session view) and KeepointL (Links View: Sorted by Organization, Domain, Keywords, KeepAs etc...) icons are added to the Internet Explorer (for versions 5.0 or higher) toolbar by Keepoint.

    Q:
I saved a page or link where did it go? How do I retrieve it?
A: The pages or links stored are managed by Keepoint in a separate database
(see related question). You can Retrieve the stored pages using KeepointT (chronological or Time sorted order) or using KeepointL (all Links, sorted in 4 different ways). Clicking on KeepointT or KeepointL, will launch a vertical explorer bar on the left pane of Internet Explorer. By clicking on the URL or Keep As, you can view the stored page in the browser window . You can also search for saved pages or links using the Find Link and Pages, from the System Tray Icon right click menu.

Q: I did not have to specify a destination folder or filename while saving. Where does Keepoint actually store the data?
A: One of the most important features of Keepoint is that while saving a page, you DO NOT need to specify a filename or a destination folder. This saves a lot of time spent in deciding for a filename and specifying the destination folder and after time passes, finally searching the whole hard disk(s) for the files one is looking for. With Keepoint you not only do not need to specify a filename, but you can save the link or page, in an One-Click operation i.e., by just clicking on
Quick Save. By default, the pages are compressed and stored in the "db" folder below the installation folder i.e., c:\program files\saora\keepoint\db. Keepoint also has a built-in File Manager, which ensures that no redundant information is stored, in order to conserve hard disk space.

Q: Can I specify / change the location of stored information?
A: Certainly. From the System Tray Icon right click menu, choose User Settings, select the Program tab and click on the Change button. You will be prompted with the message "This operation will move all the datafiles saved and may take a few minutes depending on the amount of data to be moved. Are you sure you would like to continue?". Please select Yes, if you would really like to change the path. Please refrain from using Keepoint, during this operation, as it might tamper the relocation of data operation and lose some data in the process.

    Q:
"The page you are trying to access is being saved." Please try after a few minutes. Why do I get this message and How long should I wait?
A: When you execute, ‘SAVE’ the page contents, although the control is returned to you quickly, Keepoint is actually working in the background to fetch the embedded images, frames etc. in the page, till much later. Hence you get this message, when you try to access a page which was just saved. The Keepoint System Tray Icon flashes, while it is actually executing save, once it stops flashing, you should be able to view the saved page.

    Q:
When and why is the Keyword field filled automatically?
A: If the web page you are currently browsing has keywords assigned by the author, Keepoint will automatically display those in the Keywords field. You can add, modify or delete these keywords. Specifying Keywords will help while retrieving stored pages or links. All the stored pages/links can be stored by Keywords and listed, in the Get All Links option.

    Q:
How can I specify a filename to the page I am saving?
A: One of the most important features of Keepoint is that while saving a page, you DO NOT need to specify a filename or a destination folder. With Keepoint you not only do not need to specify a filename, but you can save the link or page, in an One-Click operation i.e., by just clicking on Quick Save. You can, if you wish, specify Keep As, a string (word or phrase) which you would like to associate with that page for recalling it yourself. Keepoint will also remember the page or link with that string, and which you can use later for retrieving it. The Keep As need not be unique and hence you can use this feature to group information, a set of pages or links and combinations thereof.

    Q:
How can I search for a specific page or link?
A: You can search for saved pages or links using the Find Link and Pages, from the System Tray Icon right click menu, wherein you can specify various constraints like Validity, Action performed etc. You can browse through all the pages and links by using keepointT (chronological or Time sorted order) or using keepointL (all Links, sorted in 4 different ways).

Q: Why does Page+ operations take so much time?
A: Since the Page+ operation not only stores the currently displayed page but also all pages one link deep i.e., including embedded frames, images etc., depending on the number of links, this operation may not only consume time but also consume hard disk space. Hence, it must be used with caution. However, Page+ is a very useful function for saving web contents for offline perusal, when the contents at the original site may get renewed. Click here for details on use of Page+.
click here for detailed feature comparison.

Q: How to annotate on a page?
A: Select the Annotate Tab and first select the text before which you would like to perform the annotation. Then enter the text in the Add Note edit box and press Update button. If you would like to annotate as footnote, check the Add as Footnote checkbox, before pressing the Update button. You will first need to select the text in the browser window, before performing any operations e.g., highlighting, changing the text color etc. Click here for more details.
    - Click here to view Screenshot Annotate Screenshot

Q: Why is that the 'Add as Footnote' option sometimes disabled?
A: The Add as Footnote option is disabled if the page you are viewing consists of frames.

    Q:
Why does 'Delete Selected Area' not work sometimes?
A: Due to the current limitation of Keepoint, the Delete Selected Area operation may not work sometimes, especially if you select a large area. Please restrict your usage of Delete Selected Area to only small areas of text or individual images.

    Q:
Why does 'Undo' not work sometimes?
A: Due to the current limitation of Keepoint, the Undo operation may not work sometimes, especially when you have used the Highlight, Change Text color or Delete Selected Area for a large area. Please restrict you usage of the Highlight, Change Text color to only small areas of text and Delete Selected Area to only small areas of text or individual images. If you would like to abort the annotations you have made, click on the Cancel button, which will undo all the changes (functions same as Internet Explorer Refresh option).

    Q:
    How does Keepoint send Email?
A: Keepoint sends email by using Message Application Programming Interface(MAPI). You will need to have a MAPI compliant application such as Microsoft Outlook Express, Microsoft Outlook or Eudora etc. properly installed for Keepoint to work correctly. If you are not able to send email using Keepoint, please contact your system administrator for correct settings of your mail client application. When you send email-using Keepoint, the recipient does not need to have Keepoint installed on his/her machine. When email is sent using Keepoint with All (with images) option, the whole page contents (including annotations, embedded images) will be sent as multiple attachments. The recipient just needs to save all the files to a temporary folder and view the index.htm file using any browser.

    Q:
What will happen to all the pages I stored after uninstalling Keepoint?
A: Please note that if you uninstall Keepoint, all the data stored or saved using Keepoint will also be deleted permanently. If you were planning to reinstall Keepoint for some reason, answer No to [Would you also like to remove all data saved using Keepoint?] during the uninstall process. Click here for more details.

    Q:
What is a web research engine?
A: A web research engine is an extension of the web search engine.
      Any information task cycle involves:
    • Finding the right information

    • Acquiring/managing the information that was found

    • Interacting and collaborating with/on the acquired information.
Currently, search engines allow only for the first step. A research engine completes the above task cycle as it not only allows the user to search for information on the web, but also enables the user to acquire and interact with the information which he finds.

Thus a research engines, like Keepoint will help the user to find web-pages on the web and then Keep/Save it for future reference. The web-pages once saved can then be Annotated with the use of various tools (Highlight, insert comments) and finally these annotated pages can be Shared for collaboration.

    Q:
How do I save only the images (or a part) of the webpage?
A: Keepoint 7 allows you to choose or specify "what to keep". With the Advanced Save feature you can specify What you want to Keep from a webpage being currently viewed. You can choose to Keep
    • All, with images (Everything that you see on the webpage)

    • All, no external images (Everything you see, except for some images, mostly advertisements)

    • Top HTML Only (Only the HTML on a webpage)
    • Images Only ( Only the images on the page will be saved)
    • Links Only (Only the web links that are on the page will be saved)

    Q:
Why does Keepoint 7 have two User Interfaces?
A: The key feature of Keepoint 7 is "empowering the user". The two User Interfaces of Keepoint 7 provide you with a unique set of platform to harness your research requirements.

The Main User Interface (The Workbench) lays out the various tools in Keepoint 7 under three different sets; 1) Keep & Share, 2) Annotate and 3) Extract.

Eg: You can define a Kee-Tool to save "All, no external images" from web-pages under the KeepAs "NASA" for a period of 2 years.

    Q:
How can I carry the saved web-pages on a portable device (floppy, flash drive)?
A: Keepoint 7 allows you to Export webpage to an external device or a specified location on your hard drive. Click on the Export option and then specify or browse though to a specific location on your PC where you want your data to be saved.
